Picking the Right Flowers for an Upcoming Event
So you have an event coming up and you’re in charge of planning the flowers? At Kara’s Flowers and Victorian Gardens, we can help guide you in the selection and planning.
Here are things we will take into account, and which you should, also.
What month or season is the event scheduled for? Different flowers bloom in different seasons, and this impacts costs. If you have your heart set on flowers that bloom in the summer for your event in December, it’s going to cost you. We can guide you in selecting seasonal flowers that will be beautiful and won’t break your budget. Did you know that different flowers have different meanings? For example, white flowers signify remembrance. Asters speak of contentment. It’s not mandatory, of course, but it can be nice if the flowers you pick match the occasion and the related mood or purpose or sentiment.
Think about fragrance. Some flowers have a strong scent. There can be two issues with this. 1) Some people may not like the particular scent (tiger lilies or hyacinths, for example) or are even allergic to it and 2) if the flowers are around food, the scent can interfere with the palate. Some flowers have a lot of pollen. If guests brush up against standing arrangements or table-top bouquets that have pollen, it can get onto their clothes. Also many people are allergic to pollen, and you probably want to avoid your guests having an allergic reaction to your fabulous flowers!
You’ll want your flowers to be in full bloom on the day of your event. We can help you with this. We’ll make sure that your arrangements are in peak bloom on the right day.
Think about your flower arrangements and their height and placement. You want them below eye level so that your guests can talk to each other comfortably instead of through a bunch of flowers or having to peer around a spectacular table-top bouquet.
Is your event outdoors? You will want flowers that will continue to draw water up through their stems even after they have been cut. Flowers that draw water will last much longer than flowers that don’t. If your event is outdoors, or if the flowers will be sitting for a while, you want to use ones that stay hydrated.
It can seem overwhelming when you think of all the factors to consider in planning your flowers. At Kara’s, we stand ready to help you. We’ll take all the guesswork out of it. We’ll work within your budget and your venue and guest constraints to create exactly what you need.
